The Chicago Artists' Coalition (CAC), the Midwest's premier arts service organization, founded the Chicago Art Open in 1998 as an opportunity for Chicagoland artists to display their work in a prominent setting. Although the Art Open focuses on professional artists with a record of exhibiting, a small number of slots for emerging and student artists are provided through the support of the CAC.
The Chicago Art Open accepts entries on an open basis and features the work of approximately 300 artists in all media, including painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, mixed media, video, and installation. Each year, a panel of curators reviews all submitted work and designates approximately 10% as "Curator's Choice." All work in the exhibition is for sale, and many artists make valuable connections with local collectors, curators, and art professionals as a result of their involvement.
Thousands of art enthusiasts and visitors attend Art Open public programs, which include an Opening Benefit, special tours, family days, and panel discussions. In 2007, more than 5,000 people attended the exhibition and related programs.
